NOT MUCH ACTION HERE:
Deewaar — Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home

Dir: Milan Luthria
Cast:Amitabh Bachchan

A posse of prisoners of war devastated by years of neglect and physical torture — parked in a Pakistani classified fortified territory — must find an escape route. Now read that line again, and repeat it for a couple of hours.

It would be close to this film’s experience. For beyond the given basis of this escape escapade, beyond the finale that’s also a given (of course they’ll manage to jail-break, but obviously through a tunnel), the tiring, never ending antics make you want to bring your homes to our heroes, lest they take any longer to reach it.

One, I am not convinced which war are these PoWs from. The Major (Bachchan), old and wrinkled, obviously belongs to the 1971 war, can’t say the same for some youths in this lot.

And the most pivotal piece of this plot, a random rogue Khan (Sanjay Dutt) is not a war prisoner, not a military man, what’s he doing here?

God knows! And he tells me he also knows how easy it is for a young kid (Akshaye Khanna) to cross the borders, travel across trains in Pakistan, mess around with the military establishment, beat their bigwigs to pulp in their busy chambers and find top secret maps to one of the world’s best kept secrets (the confidential camp) — all this almost single-handedly.

With so many unanswered questions that this screenplay would not like to bother us with, it also spares us precious thought by telling us who’s who: if a character in this construction wears ‘kaajal’ in his eyes, you got it, he is a Muslim, if a Pakistani is an India-sympathiser, he is a Hindu (a reverse stereotyping of sorts)….

At best, Deewaar represents postmillennial Mumbai mainstream movies remarkably marked by scripts which dare to cast mature actors as against eye candies on centrestage (a phenomenon that will hopefully not end with Bachchan.)

However to recommend a film for its top rate performances (Bachchan
and Kay Kay in particular) or its cutting edge cinematography (Nirmal Jani) would be to recommend cinema without any context.
