Eyes Wide Shut



Shahid Kapoor contracted an eye infection during the shooting of Sooraj Barjatya's Vivaah. "He was required to do a romantic song on that day. He reported on time but his eyes were hurting and he couldn't keep it open," says an assistant director of the film, who was present on the sets.

That's when Barjatya got creative. He asked the choreographer to compose steps where Shahid could keep his eyes closed. "It was a difficult task to execute," says the assistant director. "But we somehow managed to shoot the song, ensuring that Shahid got a chance to keep his eyes closed." When contacted, Shahid said, "My eyes were hurting very badly. And we had to shoot a sequence where I am shown day-dreaming, so smoke machines had to be used. The smoke hurt my eyes all the more."

So, how did he manage to give his shot? "It wasn't easy," says Shahid. "My eyes hurt constantly, yet it was a sequence where I had to look happy and in love. Soorajji wanted me to smile. It was difficult to look happy when I was in a lot of pain, but I managed."

The actor also gives credit to his director and co-star for putting up with his problem. He says, "Soorajji made it so comfortable for me. And Amrita Rao is a great co-actress."

The assistant director adds, "Shahid gave all his shots quite well. In fact, when he was in front of camera, he looked so much at ease that it was difficult to think that a few minutes ago, the same actor's eyes were hurting and he was in pain."

Shahid Kapoor plays the role of Prem (usually portrayed by Salman Khan in Sooraj Barjatya's films) in Vivaah. The film traces the relationship of a couple from engagement to marriage.
