Step on the gas, Amrita!

Amrita Rao - a model-turned-actress with a psychology degree and around 37 TV adverts under her belt - has a livewire personality that is endearing to all her fans.

Her out-of-the-box way of thinking is admirable, however Rao needs to hit the gas peddle and get her slow-moving career on the fast track if she is to stay in the running with the bevy of newcomers. More so, with Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na thrusting her into the limelight.

So why isn't she milking her big break?

"I've received plenty of offers, but I want to remain selective. I've decided to only sign one or two films a year," she told RadioSargam. Rao obviously isn't familiar with the clichι: "If you snooze, you lose…"

Is she unfazed by her humdrum roles of 2005: Mahesh Manjrekar's Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi and John Mathew Matthan's Shikhar?

"I wasn't disappointed with myself in the films. They were both very different and I chose to do them, so now I can't say, 'I shouldn't have'. I have a strong emotional attachment to Shikhar, so I probably won't be the best person to judge the film. The reviews didn't do justice to it," Rao told Stardust.

The petite beauty made her venture into Bollywood with Raj Kanwar's Ab Ke Baras (2002). It was an average film that garnered lukewarm responses from the audience. Not long after, Rajkumar Santoshi offered her a minor part in The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002). She tasted victory with Ken Ghosh's successful commercial flick Ishq Vishk.

That she secured a toehold in Bollywood despite her family not being in the industry, is impressive. But, Rao needs to carve her niche in tinseltown with challenging parts if she wants to get bumped up to the A-list of high-calibre actors.

The quality I admire in women… impeccable behaviour.

A complete turn-off… selfish people.

My favourite show… I love all of Sajid Khan's shows.

I lie sometimes… when I am in bed (ha, ha, ha…). But seriously, they are usually white lies to avoid hurting someone, or to my mum when she worries unnecessarily.

Memorable moments… the day my first film Ishq Vishk released. It took a bumper opening and I went to the theatres with Shahid Kapoor and Ken Ghosh. The audience response was so positive and overwhelming.

Philosophy of life… life is short and sweet, so make others happy and never let anyone down.

Secret ambition… I have led such a protected life that a holiday in Venice on my own would be fun.

On a blind date I'd go out with… Brad Pitt.

If I were a burglar I'd steal…the hearts of my audience.

I'd like to be reborn as… a social worker. I would like to do something for mentally challenged individuals. Maybe I will do so in this life itself.

My allergies… snobbish people.

I am terrified of… doing a bad job in a film and letting my fans down.

My favourite book… is Arranged Marriage by Chitra Bannerfi.

A role I'd give my left arm for… I would not name a role that has been done. I want to do a role that others would give their left arm for!
